The Mormons are not strangers to attacking civil liberties in the name of God. They were openly discriminatory against African Americans until 1978.
“No person having the least particle of Negro blood can hold the Priesthood. It does not matter if they are one-sixth Negro or one-hundred and sixth, the curse of no Priesthood is the same. If an individual who is entitled to the Priesthood marries a Negro, the Lord has decreed that only spirits who are not eligible for the Priesthood will come to that marriage as children. To intermarry with a Negro is to forfeit a “Nation of Priesthood holders” “ -Brigham Young.

“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African Race? If the White man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.” – Brigham Young
“…after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham’s wife, as he had married a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representation a upon a the earth as well as God;.. ” -John Taylor 3rd President
” If there is one drop of negro blood in my children, as I have read to you, they receive the curse, There isn’t any argument, therefore, as to intermarriage with the Negro, is there? “Now we are generous with the Negro. We are willing that the Negro have the highest kind of education. I would be willing to let every Negro drive a Cadillac if they could afford it.” Mark E. Peterson, Quorum of the 12 Apostles
In 1978, President Spencer W. Kimball spoke with his Heavenly Father, the one that lives on the planet Kolob. He then made an announcement: The lord had conviencently indicated that the time for change had come. Blacks would now hold the priesthood and be full members of the church, if they were worthy.
Quite honestly, these quotes make me sick. These are definitely not people that I would not take spiritual guidance from.
Update: It apears the video I had on this post was removed from youtube, it must have upset some users?
I don’t know why it was removed, it was just an interview with the previous Mormon President Gordon B. Hinkley.

Wow, this is ridiculous. You understand nothing about the LDS religion, do you. Note my lack of question mark because it’s obviously not a question. You just plain don’t get it. But you sure have fun attacking, doncha?
First of all, you need an understanding to know what Brigham Young is actually saying here. He’s not condemning Blacks because of their skin color. The color of their skin was a mark put upon the descendants of Cain, from whom the Priesthood was taken away. The latter was the curse. Because of Cain’s sin, his posterity lost the opportunity to receive that blessing.
That he claims one will receive death upon marrying a Black person is not to say physical death. What he speaks of is a spiritual death, being cut of from God because of intermarrying with the cursed seed. In other words, they would not obtain the blessings of the Priesthood.
That said, I will concede that Brigham Young was quite vehement with his words, and the tone he uses might lead some to believe he’s hateful of Blacks, but you’d really just be taking it out of context.
I'm sorry but saying that "The color of their skin was a mark put upon the descendants of Cain" is about as racist as racism can be. So, are you saying that all black people are descended from Cain, who is supposed to be an evil person? Are you implying that the reason Black people weren't allowed to enter priesthood was because they were descendants of Cain and that they were descended from evil also? Therefore, are you trying to say that all black people are inherently evil? I am sorry, but I see that as Racism, through and through.
I apologize if the quotes offended you, but they are not my words.
I do know a bit about the LDS religion, as I grew up as a Mormon in Orem, Utah.
Wow, such racism. You would think a religion that thrives for peace and love wouldn’t hate someone just because someone looks different.
Its not because of the color of black peoples skin that they denied them the priesthood. It was because the Mormons said the blood of Cain runs through black people and Cain is evil. So although they did not say it outright they were implying the all black people were evil until 1978.
Oops, I guess I was only partly right. Actually, when I looked it up, it was the color of their skin! They, the Mormons, say that black people are black because it is the mark of Cain that God put on them for Cain’s sin of killing his brother.
The Mormon church only allowed blacks because they were getting a lot of negative attention from the media in the 70s.
I'm sure the Mormon president will allow Gays as well in the coming years, after of course he gets a "revelation".
It is unnacceptable to sit here and defend the mormon religion for allowing this type of attrocoity to occur. You mormons are racist as they get. go to south central LA and tell some brothas that the color of his skin is a direct result of a curse from God. Your a fucking fool. What an assanine thing to say. Once again the problem is that until science came along and proved that pigmentation is a result primarily of geographic location and climate and is an adaptation that has changed numerous times of the course of 20k years. And the fact that you still believe that utter nonsense is the true testament of just how perverse your religion is.
